Meet Katie Hughes, Founder of Girls Build

Hello and welcome to the Girls Succeed blog!
Tools used in the building trades
I'm thrilled to introduce you to Katie Hughes today. When Katie worked as a carpenter in the building trades, she  realized how few women actually were in the jobs that include carpentry, electrical and plumbing installation, and all the jobs or trades needed to build a house, a commercial building, or even a play house.

The demand for trades people is growing and businesses are searching for good, hard workers who love to create with their hands. Katie has made it her mission to train women for the jobs and to teach girls 8-14 years old many of the skills they can use to now to make clocks, sandboxes, and playhouses.

Katie founded Girls Build in Portland, Oregon because she wanted to "inspire curiosity and confidence in girls through the world of building." Girls Build offers workshops after school and/or a week of summer camp filled with building projects, games and fun.
She was chosen as an Everyday Hero by KATU TV Station in Oregon.
Click here to watch their VIDEO.

Simply put, Katie wants girls to "try stuff" and discover the skills she teaches. Do you have a desire to build something with your hands? Watch it grow into something useful? And look at your handiwork with pride?

Learn more about Katie and her summer camp for girls in this video. Click the title to watch.

Girls ARE Smart!, Girls Succeed!!

AND make your dreams come true!

In a report on Megan Kelly's NBC News show, a study interviewed girls from 5-7 years old. The 5- year-olds believed they were smart. After 6 years old, the girls didn't think they were smart. What happens to change the opinion of themselves?

I think they need to know some smart, successful role models to offer them as a guide to make their dreams into reality. Learning about  these women can convince them that smart women can achieve their dreams.

Take a look at this video of smart girls who are successful in their careers.

Trailblazer: Race Car Driver Danica Patrick Races Today in the Daytona 500

NASCAR Driver Danica Patrick is a real competitor. After Thursday night's contact on the race track with a NASCAR driver who pushed too close to her race car and caused her to spin and wreck her vehicle, she didn't give up. After several pit stops for repair, she raced so she could qualify in today's Daytona 500 race. To be assured of a spot in The Great American Race on Sunday, Patrick needed to finish at least 16th in her Duel qualifier. With her skill and determination, she set her race helmet to do that.

During the duel race, she radioed her team to find out what she needed to do to make it into the most important race in NASCAR schedule of 2015 races. In an interview at FOXSports.com she said,   "At the end when they told me I need four spots or, 'You need to pass these two cars or you're 18th right now,' I was like, 'Okay, do I have to be desperate basically? Do I have to pass these cars?' Nobody answered me. I just said, 'Screw it, I'm going to be desperate.' "

Danica did it! She is racing in the 2015 Daytona 500 in her bright green #10 car emblazoned with her sponsor's logo, Go Daddy.

Many years ago, this feisty young woman was really my spark to begin featuring trailblazing women  on this blog and to tell the stories of  successful women and their careers in an eBook for girls. I want girls to hear the stories of these role models and be empowered to pursue their dream careers and goals. Danica Patrick certainly is an inspiring role model.

Danica began racing go karts when she was ten years old at the Sugar River Raceway in Broadhead, Wisconsin. At sixteen she moved to England to advance her racing career racing in the British national series. From this beginning she kept working on her racing skills and pushed on to success after success. Her win in the 2008 Indy Japan 300 is the only women's victory in an IndyCar Series race and her third place in the 2009 Indianapolis 500 the highest finish there ever by a woman.  In 2013, she became the first female NASCAR driver to win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole, turning in the fastest qualifying lap since 1990 - qualifying for the Daytona. And this year she returns to Daytona to race after overcoming the car wreck and having to drive a back up car around those high sloped sides of the Daytona track.

Go Danica!

I'll update you on the results after the race is finished this evening.

UPDATE: February 23, 2015

Danica finished 21st in the field of 43 cars. Amazing performance! She was flying around the race track at 200 mph and so were all the cars. I can only relate to driving on I-95 at 75 mph with traffic whizzing by me at 80 or 90 mph. I cannot imagine driving at those NASCAR race speeds.

How about you? Are you interested in racing cars or being a car/truck mechanic? Leave a comment below.

Introducing Girls Succeed!!

Today I am going to explain why I titled this blog Girls Succeed. I want to introduce you to the book of the same name, Girls Succeed: Stories Behind the Careers of Successful Women.

From 2003-2006 I spent summers working at a girls summer resident camp in Michigan,  Camp Newaygo. I enjoyed meeting and interacting with the campers and the counselors. So many smart, energetic girls with such wonderful futures ahead of them. I wondered in this new world of more career opportunities for women what choices would girls make. What plans do they dream for their future?

In 2006 I began the process of interviewing successful women about their careers and how their lives led to their decisions. I gathered all the interviews and put them together so girls can discover information about careers.

It has taken me this long to get it all together and to decide to publish the book as an interactive e-book, the technology which completes my vision as a way to deliver an interesting, worthwhile experience for the readers. After each interview there are links and resources for learning more about the woman and her career. So when the reader is connected to the internet, she can click on links for more information.

It is my hope the profiles with these savvy women will inspire and empower the girls to dream big dreams and to work hard to make their dreams come true.

Girls Succeed: Stories Behind the Careers of Successful Women will be released in October. Come back for more information as I step into this exciting new adventure in publishing. Grab your ticket and join me as I share this new beginning with you.

Mackenzie Woodring, Gold Medalist in Cycling

The Summer Paralympics are this week in London, England. Athletes from all over the world compete in 20 sports and 500 events. The games are held in London using the same venues as the Olympic Games 2012. The highly skilled athletes who compete in the paralympic games have physical disabilities.

Mackenzie Woodring, athlete

Team USA members Mackenzie Woodring and  Karissa Whitsell won gold, silver and bronze medals in cycling in the 2008 Paralympics held in Beijing, China. Mackenzie and Karissa raced a tandem bicycle which seats two riders. Mackenzie was the pilot on this team because Karissa is blind/visually impaired. This team combines their athletic skills into a powerful duo to race competitors from many countries.

Mackenzie joined the U.S. Paralympics team to partner with Karissa. Not only did they medal three times at the Paralympics, they set a world record in cycling.

Mackenzie Woodring
I told Mackenzie I'd have to edit out the porta-potties in the back ground for the book,
 but she exclaimed,
"Porta-potties are very important to racers!" So I left them in for this post.
At this elite level of competition, Mackenzie has to keep training year round.  It is difficult for her to put in the ten to twenty hours of training each week because she also has a full time job as an engineer.  Ninety percent of the women who race need to work at another job.  The prize money for winning is not enough to depend on for a living.

You can learn more about Mackenzie Woodring and her career in bicycle racing in the interactive e-book Girls Succeed: Stories Behind the Careers of Successful Women which will be released this fall. Check back regularly to the Girls Succeed blog to learn more about careers and remarkable women and for updates on the e-book.

For more information about Mackenzie and the Paralympics click on the sites below:
