Website for Girls' Books: A Mighty Girl

Hello, Readers,

I hope you're having a fun summer. As you can tell from my absence on this blog, I'm having a "busy" summer taking online writing workshops, grandparenting my grandkids, camping, and trying to finish my latest manuscript. My goal was to have the first draft done by the end of May. Hmm, it's nearly the end of July, and I have about three chapters to go!

I've also been reading books because I love to read whether it is summer or winter. It's a pleasure to read no matter what time of year (or day) it is.

If you like to read, I have discovered a treasure trove of books for girls all in one spot, A Mighty Girl, "books for smart, confident, and courageous girls" like you!

A Mighty Girl

From their website--"A Mighty Girl's book section features over 2,000 girl-empowering books starring stellar Mighty Girl characters. After years of seeking out empowering and inspirational books for our four young nieces, we decided to create A Mighty Girl as a resource site to help others equally interested in supporting and celebrating girls. The site was founded on the belief that all children should have the opportunity to read books, play with toys, listen to music, and watch movies that offer positive messages about girls and honor their diverse capabilities.
Girls do not have to be relegated to the role of sidekick or damsel in distress; they can be the leaders, the heroes, the champions that save the day, find the cure, and go on the adventure. It is our hope that these high-quality children’s products will help a new generation of girls to grow and pursue whatever dreams they choose -- to truly be Mighty Girls!" --co-founders Carolyn Danckaert and Aaron Smith
As you probably already know, I'm fond of featuring trailblazers and role models on this website, so when I saw a category for girls about role models, I decided to explore A Mighty Girl. I was thrilled to discover so many books for girls, so many categories, and the excellent way of breaking down each category into smaller niches. For example I clicked on Books>Mighty Girls and Women>role models> and discovered the role models classified into many fields/careers such as athletes, entrepreneurs, heroes, writers and poets and many more. So much fun to see all the titles for each designation.

I enjoyed the blog post found at Tied Up With String. The author tells you why she likes A Mighty Girl. If you wish, hop over to the link to her site.

Whether you are looking for a picture book or a chapter book, there are plenty of empowering books for girls 0-13+. Take a peek for yourself at A Mighty Girl and have a fun time reading this summer!

I liked A Mighty Girl on Facebook. You can too at their Facebook page, A Mighty Girl.

What book or books have you read this summer? Leave a comment. I love to hear from you.

Ban Bossy Campaign Encourages Girls to Be Leaders

Image courtesy of stockimages at freedigitaldownloads.com

As a girl growing up, I was called bossy. And I was! LOL...I was smart and I could organize people. I was the one who held my hand up to answer the questions the teacher asked. I had friends around me and enjoyed being in a group.

Then sixth grade hit. All of a sudden I felt like I'd better not answer the questions or be smart because boys didn't like smart girls, and I wouldn't fit in if I stood out and took the lead on projects and headed organizations.

Middle School is a tough time for girls who are searching to find out who they are. Their bodies are changing and their emotions are on the surface. They are given more responsibility which will require them to move away from childhood ways. This is a time which can crush a girl's initiative because she doesn't want to be different from her peers, but rather to fit in.

A group of successful women  are trying to encourage girls not to pull away from taking leadership roles. Leading by example, these three women are speaking up so girls and women will take on roles in leadership.

,The three women, powerhouses in today's world, are Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, and the CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Anna Maria Chávez. Their goal is to ban the word bossy, a negative label they say is too often applied to young girls, and one of the many ways they are discouraged from speaking up.

They hope the Ban Bossy campaign will not only start an open dialogue about women in leadership and their obstacles, but help inspire young girls to speak up and seek out leadership roles early.

How do you feel about the word bossy? Do you believe girls are not encouraged to be leaders? Are you a leader? Leave a comment below. We'd love to get your opinion.

Video: Girl Rising--Education for Girls

An important film, Girl Rising, is opening in the USA. Amazing in its width and breadth exploring the lives of girls on this planet. It is a close-up view of lives of girls and the importance of girls getting an education.

Girls are important! You are important! An education is the ticket to opening wonderful worlds of hope and security for girls. Watch the video.

You can find out more about the movie and locations where it is being shown in your area. I haven't seen the entire movie, but I hope I get the opportunity this spring. To learn more about this project go to the Girl Rising website.

What are your thoughts on girls and education?

Did you see the movie? Tell us about it. Did it make a difference in how you think? how you perceive your world?

Please share your feelings by leaving a comment below. Thank you.
