Book Review: YA Romance, After by Barbara Ehrentreu

Hello and welcome. Today I am reviewing an emotional story of family and sweet romance.

Before I review the YA romance, After, let the author tell you what the story is about.
After, YA Romance
After is a story about the struggles Lauren Walstein, a fifteen-year-old girl, has to go through when her father suddenly has a heart attack and undergoes bypass surgery. In one phone call her life changes completely. Lauren is a character with whom most teens will relate. Her best friend since kindergarten, Joey, is going out with her enemy and they have grown apart. Before the phone call all she thought about was getting a scholarship for softball, and the Mets. Suddenly she must deal with both her father’s illness and being in school. The demands on her from both ends complicate the story. In the middle of all this, she finds she is developing feelings for her best friend that are more than friendly. Is he feeling the same or is he just comforting her? In addition there is Joey’s mean girl friend Amber, who doesn’t appreciate Lauren being in the picture. Will Lauren’s father recover? How will Lauren cope with her new feelings for Joey?

Book Review for After by J.Q. Rose
I gave AFTER five stars because I believe so many teen girls will relate to the situations and feelings of the main character in this book. Lauren is 15, a tough age for kids trying to get a handle on life. But added to this, Lauren's father is stricken with a heart attack. Ms. Ehrentreu portrays the family dealing with this sudden life and death situation in their lives very well. The conversations seem so real. I almost felt like I was eaves-dropping in their lives! The author tackles another teen emotion, falling in love, but this one is even more difficult to deal with when she is having romantic feelings for a boy she has known since kindergarten. Big problem. He has a girlfriend and she is definitely NOT friendly with Lauren. The ending is very satisfying, but I'm not going to spoil it for you. You'll enjoy this great read.

Review of Dream Shade by Heather Fraser Brainerd--YA Paranormal Mystery Romance

Young Adult Paranormal Mystery Romance
Here's a summary of the story:
As if high school wasn't tough enough, sophomore Sarah Pasmore has one extra little problem: ghosts have started appearing to Sarah and they seem to want something from her. With help from her brainy best friend, as well as a few new friends (including the hottest guy in school), Sarah must solve the mystery of what the spirits want in order to put them back to rest. To complicate matters further, a more evil spirit will go to great lengths to make sure this doesn’t happen. As they investigate the past to unravel this supernatural mystery, the teens learn a lesson in the powers of friendship and love.

Review:
I don't like ghosts unless it's Casper, the friendly ghost. But because I enjoy Heather Brainerd's storytelling, I decided to try Dream Shade. I was not disappointed. Brainerd skillfully handled mixing a contemporary teen story with a Victorian era ghost story. What a brilliant juggling act to develop these characters and settings. The interaction between her family seemed so typical and contemporary and very entertaining. Sara, the main character, also had to deal with being a teen and meeting the cute guy she always dreamed of. She involved her friends to help her sort out these crazy dreams of ghosts, and what a romp we enjoy as we read the story of the kids uncovering who the ghosts are and what they want. It kept me reading to find out how this talented author could wrap up all these story lines and deliver a satisfaction ending. She did all of that and with lots of humor too!

Dream Shade is now available at MuseItUp Publishing, Amazon, and all major online booksellers.

ABOUT HEATHER

Heather Fraser Brainerd is a renaissance woman. After earning a degree in Anthropology, she embarked on an incongruous career as a workers’ compensation insurance adjuster.

She rapidly climbed the claims-handling ladder before surprising her colleagues by leaving the high-powered world of lumbar strains and carpal tunnel syndrome to run a child care center. Thousands of dirty diapers and gallons of strained peas later, she decided that maybe the insurance industry wasn’t quite as bad as she remembered. It was. Fortunately, a few brief years into that second stint, she was swept off her feet by the most wonderful man in the world. Now a stay-home mom to three amazing boys, she is able, at long last, to focus on her writing. In addition to her fictional explorations, she writes a foodie column for the Rochester magazine Citizen. Heather lives in New York with her family and their crazy pug/terrier.

She’s not alone; a presence is always there, keeping her safe, yet she feels vulnerable, and hunted.

Zakk, Prince of Zantar, is under the Witch Queen’s spell as she tries to take over his world. He crosses paths with Kiera, and their fates are entwined.

As their journey unravels, she learns that she is not the only one affected by this prince. Who is on her side? Will she find out why she has been chosen? How can someone so young, defeat such evil? Will she find the strength to save the ones closest to her? Will this be Kiera’s only Quest?

Book Review by J.Q. Rose

If you are a reader of fantasy, then you are in for a great read when you choose Kiera's Quest Awakenings. I loved the really, really wicked Queen and the complete opposite of wickedness, Kiera, the main character. The story is told in a quaint English language which adds to the atmosphere in the tale.

Kids will identify with Kiera in her contemporary world of school and friends. But her life becomes woven together with Zakk, Prince of Zatar, who is from another world. The story has suspense, mystery, and dark action which may be too intense for young readers.

The imaginative storytelling kept me turning pages.  I raced to the end of the story to discover what would happen to Zakk, Kiera, and her friends. I was disappointed to discover the story does not wrap up all the loose ends, but rather, Kiera has to go on another quest to discover the answers. There are two more books in the series. If you don't mind reading a serial, I think you would enjoy this lively story.

One of the most oft repeated advice of personal coaches, and I believe it to be excellent advice, is for one to surround oneself with individuals who radiate positive energy and a can do attitude; the kind of people who attain their sought after goals and who by doing so encourage and inspire others to pursue their passions and their dreams. In "Girls Succeed: Stories Behind the Careers of Successful Women", J. Q. Rose facilitates an introduction to fifteen incredible women whose stories and achievements in a myriad of fields that include horse training, medicine, writing, athleticism, entrepreneurship, to name a few, are inspirational and motivating. Rose's book to your circle of friends. A highly recommended well worth investment for girls and women of any age.

Book Review: Author Lisa Orchard's The Super Spies and the Cat Lady Killer

I love the eye-catching book cover for Lisa Orchard's The Super Spies and the Cat Lady Killer. It certainly portrays the mystery and danger in the story. My review follows the synopsis.

Get in on the discussion at Lisa Orchard's blog today on how each of us are unique.

The Super Spies and the Cat Lady Killer opens in a small town in Michigan where fifteen-year-old Sarah Cole is stuck spending the summer at her Aunt and Uncle’s with her sister, Lacey. She’s not happy with the situation until she befriends a girl named Jackie. The three girls stumble upon the ruthless murder of a reclusive neighborhood woman. One of the officers investigating the crime believes the girls are responsible for her death. Fearing that this officer will frame them for the murder, the girls organize their own detective squad. They become the Super Spies and start their own fact-finding mission.  The Super Spies can’t understand why anyone would want to murder the “Cat Lady” until they start digging into her past and discover a horrible crime that happened thirty years ago. They uncover a connection between the two crimes and attempt to bring this information to the police, only to be reprimanded for meddling in the inquest. Not only are the girls upset by the admonition, but they also struggle with the fact that their exuberant investigating could provide a legal loophole allowing the killer to go free. To make matters worse, the police don’t even believe them. Frustrated by this turn of events, the Super Spies realize it’s up to them to snare the Cat Lady killer, or die trying.

REVIEW:  Lisa Orchard's tale of murder in a small town is a romp through the minds and relationships of three girls who take on the task of discovering the murderer. Why, you ask, would teens want to find a killer? Because a policeman wants to "pin the murder" on the girls and they learn more about the dead woman who has lost a child. Orchard lays out the details in a an easy to read style and paces the book so the reader can discover clues and absorb the story as it develops. I enjoyed the easy banter between the girls and watching how their friendship becomes stronger throughout the scenes. I wonder if you will be able to figure out the murderer before the end of the book!

Uncle Walt is a teacher, and he was in the school when the bomb exploded. Taking matters into her own hands, Sarah decides to search for him. The rest of the Super Spies are right behind her. When a fireman chases them away from the school, Sarah becomes suspicious. She decides to investigate. The FBI arrives on the scene. Sarah realizes this bombing could have even bigger implications. Searching for the bombers, Sarah is introduced to the world of terrorism. She fears that the bombing and her parents’ disappearance are connected and terrorists are involved. To make matters worse, the bombers are determined to finish the job. Can the Super Spies find the bombers before it’s too late?

Review: Ride for Rights by Tara Chevrestt

Historical fiction
Last Friday, Tara Chevrestt was  a guest on the Girls Succeed blog. I invited her to tell us about the true story behind her 1916 story because I enjoyed reading her book so much. You can click on her interesting story which was posted on the Girls Succeed blog at Tara Chevrestt Ride for Rights.

My Review of Ride to Rights:

Ride for Rights follows the fictional adventures of two sisters who are determined to ride motorcycles across America in 1916. Why? Because they are proving women can do it AND to further the early twentieth century women's fight for the right to vote.

This amazing book, based on a true story, is one that makes the reader stand up and cheer for these young ladies who have a lot of grit and courage. Can you imagine driving a car let alone a bike across 1916 America with no road maps or even roads? I do think the author could have played up the overwhelming obstacles in the way of accomplishing such a feat. I loved the history mixed in with the adventure allowing readers a glimpse of life in the USA in 1916. Very well-written descriptions and dialog make this story a winner.

Ride for Rights is available on MuseItUpAmazonBarnes & Noble, and Smashwords.
