Google Encourages Girls to Check Out Careers in Computer Technology

Google is launching a new site to encourage girls to learn about building technology. The site, Made with Code, will mentor girls who are interested in careers in computer science and inspire more girls to look into opportunities in the amazing world of computer technology.

Chelsea Clinton, guest speaker at Made With Code Conference for Girls

YouTube Chief Executive Susan Wojcicki shared a common concern for many women in tech: that there are "far too few young girls" pursuing similar careers. Less than 1% of high school girls, she said, express interest in majoring in computer science.
Are you considering a career in computer science? Let us know by leaving a comment below. Thank you.

  1. I did have a career in Computer Science, but it was almost entirely by accident. As an English major, you wouldn't think I'd have much to do with the CS Dept. until they needed documentation for an NSF project. The programmers scrabbled some thoughts and I cleaned them up. Since it was pretty techie stuff, I started taking CS courses so I'd know what they were trying to say. I created my own major (signed off by the CS dept. head) in what is now offered as technical documentation. The rest, as is said, is history. Tech writer, to manager of a computer services department, to programmer/analyst. Those are just the highlights. I would definitely encourage young women to get into the CS courses as early as they're offered. Good for Google to support this.

  2. Marva, I didn't know you had such an extensive background in computer technology. You were probably the only female in the office! I'm surprised girls aren't taking up coding. If I were 18 again, I'd love to get into creating apps and writing programs. Challenging but fun. Definitely kudos to Google for bringing about this awareness.
